5 Common Eye Conditions Evaluated & Treated by Our Phoenix Ophthalmology Team
Are one of these conditions causing your blurriness, double vision, blind spots, impaired night vision, or other symptoms? Be sure to come see our eye care professionals for a thorough eye exam to find out.
It's important to realize that these eye conditions are not always curable. However, early detection and treatment can slow disease progression and help you maintain your eyesight for as long as possible. For this reason, scheduling a regular eye exam is key.
1. Refractive errors.
Any problem with your cornea, lens, or other eye part that affects the way light enters your eye is considered a refractive error. Problems include nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Treatment for refractive errors typically includes prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses, or LASIK eye surgery (for appropriate candidates).
2. Glaucoma.
Known as the "sneak thief of sight," glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, despite the fact that it doesn't show up with symptoms at first. It's caused by an increase in intraocular (inner eye) pressure, which can lead to pressure and damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is necessary for carrying visual information to the brain for processing.
Glaucoma is typically treated with medicated eye drops.
3. Cataracts.
Over time, some people experience clouding of their lens (the clear disc-like structure located directly behind your pupil). Approximately 90% of people over the age of 65 have one.
Treatment requires surgical removal, and the implantation of a replacement lens. This is a relatively common procedure.
4. Macular degeneration.
The macula is the center of your retina, which is the thin sensitive tissue on the inside of the back of your eye that collects visual images to be sent to the brain via the optic nerve. As some people age, the macula can begin to breakdown, either due to the proliferation of small yellow deposits ("dry" type) or an overgrowth of small leaky blood vessels in the retina ("wet" type).
Treatment depends on why the macula is degenerating, and may include eye drops, nutritional guidance, and surgery.
5. Diabetic retinopathy.
Millions of Americans living with diabetes (a chronic disease that impairs the way the body regulates blood sugar) are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy. This is a breakdown of the retina due to inflammation and breakdown of retina blood vessels secondary to high blood sugar.
Treatment typically includes proper diabetic disease management, as well as medicated eye drops.
