How to Prevent Computer Vision

How to Prevent Computer Vision

At Eye Doctors of Arizona, we see many patients who complain of computer vision syndrome. While this condition can be treated, we'd like to show you ways to prevent computer vision syndrome from developing.

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

If your eyes feel irritated, inflamed, itchy, or burning after computer use, you could have computer vision syndrome.

Workers who suffer computer vision syndrome are more likely to make errors at work and to suffer a drop in productivity.

Since you can't discontinue using computers, our ophthalmologist recommends lifestyle adjustments to decrease symptoms and prevent computer-related eye strain.

Work in the right lighting

Most offices are twice as bright as the recommended lighting for working with computers. By reducing external light and dimming light inside, you'll make it easier for your eyes to see the screen. Rather than overhead fluorescent lighting, which is harsh, choose incandescent or halogen bulbs positioned on the desk or floor (not overhead).

Use an LCD Monitor

LCD monitors (like those found on laptops) aren't prone to flickering like the CRT style monitor most often used with desktops. To reduce eye strain, select a high-resolution LCD monitor.

Keep contrast high

Your eyes work best when there is a high level of contrast between text and background, typically black and white although other combinations of light and dark work too. Avoid a low level of contrast or using images as the background; this strains your eyes.

Take breaks

Give yourself a break from computer work by doing other tasks, taking a walk, or looking across your office periodically throughout the day. This gives your eye muscles a break, reducing strain. Blinking also helps give your eyes a break by keeping the eyes lubricated.

Testimonials

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

I recommend Eye Doctors of Arizona. The entire staff is always happy, pleasant, and helpful. Dr. Heller is wonderful... always thorough, and accurate. An excellent doctor. I was fortunate to meet his second son, Ben, who will be joining the practice soon. Now with their two offices, it is even more convenient to book appointments.
