The Trouble with Blue Light

Why should blue light be singled out from all the other colors of the rainbow as a potential problem? Visible light exists at different frequency levels, which we perceive as different colors.  The frequency range of 380 to 500 nanometers, extending from violet through turquoise hues, is also known as the HEV (high energy visible) light range. The turquoise end of the HEV range actually has some important health benefits, such as helping to regulate your state of alertness, but the violet end of the HEV range has been associated with a condition called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD causes progressive, irreversible retinal damage that can leave you legally and functionally blind if it becomes too severe.

Any part of the HEV spectrum can cause eye strain and fatigue, as you've probably experienced firsthand if you work at a computer. The LED monitors commonly used in today's computing environments pump out a steady stream of blue light. Constant exposure to these light sources can leave you with irritated eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and other complaints.

Smart Protective Measures from Our Optometry Center

It only makes sense to protect your precious eyes against the potential dangers of blue light. Fortunately, our team of eye care specialists can help you do just that. Yellow or orange-tinted glasses can block HEV light and reduce eye strain, but they can also alter your color perception, which makes them problematic for driving and other everyday activities. Either eye doctor at our clinic can fit you with specialized computer glasses that contain blue light blocking lenses. The special polymers that coat these lenses block both UV and HEV light frequencies, giving your eyes a double dose of protection without introducing any obvious tint to the colors you see.

Testimonials

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

I recommend Eye Doctors of Arizona. The entire staff is always happy, pleasant, and helpful. Dr. Heller is wonderful... always thorough, and accurate. An excellent doctor. I was fortunate to meet his second son, Ben, who will be joining the practice soon. Now with their two offices, it is even more convenient to book appointments.
