Orthokeratology

Treating Nearsightedness with Non-Surgical Orthokeratology

At Eye Doctors of Arizona, we offer a non-surgical treatment for myopia or nearsightedness called orthokeratology. This process uses special contact lenses to produce results similar to those of LASIK, but with temporary effect. By wearing the lenses while sleeping, patients with nearsightedness can experience clear vision during the daytime without glasses or contact lenses. This can help people who either don't qualify for LASIK vision correction or prefer a non-surgical procedure. It also can help patients who need to engage in activities without glasses or contacts for a period of time and still see clearly.  The American Academy of Ophthalmology says it's like "orthodontics for your eyes."

Conditions Treated with Orthokeratology

The American Academy of Orthokeratology notes that, although it is typically used for moderate nearsightedness called myopia, it may also be effective for high-prescription myopia, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. It can be especially helpful with younger patients whose vision is still changing and may not be ready for LASIK correction. The specially prescribed contacts don't actually push the cornea into shape but guide the cornea using hydraulic forces as they reshape by redistributing fluid in the cornea and causing its shape to change.

Reasons Why Ortho K May be a Good Choice

Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho K, involves multiple visits to the eye doctor and special lenses but generally costs quite a bit less than LASIK treatments. It can help patients who aren't ready to make the commitment to LASIK, and it also allows patients to receive vision correction for special events such as performances or weddings. It does take some time to adjust initially, but the effect can be enjoyed for years with daily use. The Ortho-K lenses are gas permeable so that, during the night when they are worn, the cornea still receives the oxygen it needs to stay healthy. Once the lenses have adjusted according to the prescription, a retainer lens will be used to keep the new shape.

Testimonials

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

I recommend Eye Doctors of Arizona. The entire staff is always happy, pleasant, and helpful. Dr. Heller is wonderful... always thorough, and accurate. An excellent doctor. I was fortunate to meet his second son, Ben, who will be joining the practice soon. Now with their two offices, it is even more convenient to book appointments.
