What are Pterygiums?
A pterygium is a growth of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye. A pterygium will typically start near the inner corner of the eye and extend towards the center of the cornea, the clear dome in the center of your eye. Though often harmless, they can interfere with vision or cause irritation if they grow large enough.
Signs and Symptoms of a Pterygium:
- Pink or fleshy growth on the white of the eye
- Redness, itchiness, or burning sensation
- Dryness or foreign body sensation
- Blurred vision, especially if the pterygium extends onto the cornea
- Tearing
- Light sensitivity
How are Pterygiums Diagnosed?
A comprehensive eye exam by your Ophthalmologist or Optometrist is sufficient to diagnose a pterygium. During the exam the doctor examines the growth's size, location, and any impact on your vision.
When is Treatment Needed?
Treatment for pterygium isn't always necessary. If the growth is small and doesn't cause symptoms, regular monitoring might be enough. However, treatment becomes crucial if the pterygium:
- Interferes with vision
- Causes persistent discomfort
- Affects contact lens wear
- Is cosmetically bothersome
Treatment Options for Pterygiums:
- Eye drops: Lubricating or steroid eye drops can alleviate dryness and irritation.
- Pterygium Surgery: At Eye Doctors of Arizona we offer the latest techniques in surgical excision of pterygium. Typically a preoperative examination is performed in which photos and surface maps of the eye are obtained. The day of surgery you will arrive at our outpatient surgery center and be given IV sedation for relaxation. In addition, local anesthesia will be applied to the side of the eye so there will be no pain. Your surgeon will remove pterygium and place an amniotic membrane over the bare area to aid healing and reduce risk of recurrence. Recovery after surgery typically involves eye drops, eye protection, and regular follow-up appointments with minimal downtown.
